Tobias Hug (DE/UK)

Explorer of the human voice, compassionate and inspiring teacher, vocal whizz-kid and entrepreneur, a cappella journeyman and beatbox gypsy – Tobias Hug has been singing, teaching, travelling for more than 20 years. He is deeply involved in the a cappella, choral music and beatbox scene around the globe, one of its connecting and most connected figures.

Based in London, he currently performs with his vocal group Beatvox as well as with  The Beatbox Collective ,  an UK All-Star Group, which currently holds the title of World Beatbox Team Champions.

Tobias holds a Master Degree in Rhythmic Choir Conducting and Vocal Leadership - a unique course only taught at the Royal Conservatory of Aarhus & Aalborg. His deep passion and commitment to teaching leads to workshops and residen- cies in places as diverse as Singapore, Norway, China and Kenya.

As special focus for Tobias is to be vocal entrepreneur - to develop new ideas around vocal music and specifically around festivals. Most prominently, he was co-founder and Artistic Director for the italian festival Vocalmente (Other curating roles included London A Cappella Festival, the first Luxembourg Festival A CAPE’lla and the European Vocal Music Conference LEO Sings). He helped to set up the European A cappella Network, EVA (European Voices Association).

Being a Loop Artist, himself, he also set up Vocaloops, a community of vocal loopers and also the world’s first vocal loop station competition.

Born in Freiburg/Germany, the capital of the Black Forest, Tobias initially studied Music Education and never limited himself to one particular form of music, exploring anything from throat singing to vocal jazz, from Early Music to beatboxing. Luckily,  Freiburg happened to be the base for the newly-founded Jazzchor Freiburg, Germany’s best jazz choir at the time - a perfect musical training ground.

From 2001-2012, Tobias sang with Grammy-Award winning a cappella group The Swingle Singers and was one of their longest-serving members.

As their bass and vocal percussionist he was part of seven studio albums, and performed more than 700 concerts around the world - from Teatro alla Scala to the Kremlin Palace. As their former Artistic Director (2008-10), he set up collaborations, recordings and projects - e.g. the world’s first Beatbox Choir together with Björk-collaborator Shlomo.

The Swingles’ or Tobias’ arrangements & voices can be heard on TV show “Glee”, on a Monty Python movie as well as many TV adverts (e.g. T-Mobile’s “Welcome home” Flashmob campaign)

Tobias loves collaborations and frequently does so, also beyond the a cappella and vocal world. He has worked or performed with Bobby McFerrin, German techno legend Tiefschwarz, experimental music artist Aphex Twin, classical music icon Katia Labeque, the late Les Paul (inventor of the electric guitar), Jamie Cullum, The Puppini Sisters .. and many more.

As part of London Voices Choir, Tobias has contributed to the soundtracks of movies like The Hobbit, Interstellar or computer games like Castle Wolfenstein and World of Warcraft Charity work and the wider social context of music is also an important of his work. In 2012 Tobias was part of a project in Kenya, working with orphans in the slums in Nairobi. In 2015, Tobias started collaborating with the romanian charity Paradaiz on social inclusion through music - working with children in the Roma Ghetto of Baia Mare, launching a Beatbox Academy.

He is a sought after teacher, consultant and adjudicator (e.g. The German Choir Competition, Vocal Asia, Voice Festival UK, Terem Crossover Competition St.Petersburg)
